Like chapters of a book unravelling its story… motiroti went through its incredibly rich life of creating collaborations and associations literally with hundreds of artists and millions across the globe. Its ethos based on a culture of sharing, continues.
As a young nineteen year old and secretly in love with senior NCA student in Lahore, I wanted to know his zodiac sign to understand him better inside and out. And he, he had no idea when he was born because his elders put a made up date on his birth certificate. According to his mother he was born the same summer, two days apart when her favourite white goat had her first-born. There was too much commotion so no one remembered! NOMADI a portrait of coffee, rice and wheat, Nomadi, is an homage to migration and culture. Over three months of process yeilded this interactive installation presented at Parco Arte Vivente in Turin- Italy, from 16 Jan – 10 Mar 2014.
Dictatorial is thumbs down and negotiational is thumbs up for me – almost always! For Journeys of Love and More Love I have had to send the menu to Melbourne and to Singapore, to make sure, the taster offerings would get prepared in time. Displacements and migrations of all sorts, some fleeting some life changing, that unfold in the arenas of international airports. Globalised in their psychology, these spaces demand homogeneity. Yet each city leaves its subtle imprint and behind each city’s imprint is a national engine at play creating an arena that permeates a unique sense of welcome. Airports are the first port of entry as well as the last port of exit, they are the temples of ‘hello & good bye’. Continue reading Changi’s generosity
motiroti archive covering most of its projects from the last 21 years is now available online.
Providing a valuable source of research for students, scholars, artists, collaborators and producers it charts the journey of the company. This archive is by no means exhaustive neither is it accompanied by critical discourse or writings. It is a visual treat never the less and with short accompanying texts on content and context, it creates an opportunity for me to acknowledge all those who have been part of this bigger picture and without who agency, collaboration, participation and generosity these works would never be made possible.
And I hope it creates an opportunity for you to be able to see how the narrative of motiroti has evolved and to contribute to ways in how the organisation can continue to develop!
